The Magical Crystal

Nidhi Verma

Mom held a piece of crystal,

And moved it round and round,

In a pail filled with water,

As I stood with ‘Jerry’ our hound.

The water had turned cleaner,

Some dirt had settled down,

The crystal had just vanished,

I was still scratching my crown.

Was mom some enchantress,

An illusionist, or a whizz?;

Could she turn us into a chicken,

And gulp us down with fizz?

Mom looked at me and Jerry,

As if reading what we thought,

And she burst into laughter,

Leaving Jerry and me distraught.

She smiled and called us closer,

And asked us to calm down;

She said it was no sorcery,

We could let our guard down!

She brought out one more crystal,

And placed it in my hand;

It seems they call it ALUM,

And it can settle all the sand.

“So in life be like water,

Let optimism your alum be,

It will bury all your vices,

So you emerge a lustrous sea”
