So, we have all heard about the frog and water experiment – you drop the frog in hot water and it jumps right out, but if you instead increase the temperature slowly it doesn’t realize that it could get burnt, and finally, it dies.

But have you actually ever thought of challenging this story? Adam Grand conducted this experiment and found the results to be the exact opposite of what has been told to us for ages!

Grant highlights through real-life events, how the ability to challenge our own thoughts - in other words 'thinking again' can benefit us at work and in our personal lives. He encourages people to develop confident humility and not be consumed by unrealistic confidence and biases. Some of the interesting learnings from the book:

  1. Develop a scientist mindset, over that of a preacher, prosecutor or politician. Simply put, be curious and positive about a contrarian viewpoint instead of pushing yours blindly.

  2. Self-doubt can be a positive thing as it makes us work harder towards gaining more knowledge

  3. Humility does not mean a lack of confidence. On the contrary, it enables us to be open to the idea that we could be wrong.

  4. Learn to enjoy being wrong - learn to detach!

  5. Debate with empathy and confident humility and not mere facts. Don't force your ideas but ask genuine questions instead.

  6. Don't try to prove yourself; rather, improve yourself

The author talks at length about how we can develop confident humility and how it can benefit us to lead more fulfilled lives - both at work and otherwise :)
